What Is aĀ Non VGT Turbo?
Almost every turbocharged diesel engine today comes from the factory equipped with a VGT turbo. AĀ non VGT turboĀ is the older, and less complex, technology. Many truck owners consider replacing a VGT turbo with a non VGT unit to be an upgrade.
In a non VGR turbo the critical parameter is the A/R ratio. This refers to the cross-sectional area of the exhaust inlet and the offset of the inlet from the center of the turbine. Itās an indicator of the torque the exhaust gases can apply and it governs how quickly the turbo will spool up at varying engine speeds.
When buying aĀ non VGT turbo,Ā you select the A/R ratio you need for the driving characteristics you want. Weāre here to help with that.
Whatās theĀ Difference Between VGT andĀ Non VGT Turbo?
Variable geometry means the turbocharger can adjust the leverage applied to the turbine. The most common method is to direct gases onto different regions of the turbine by angling teardrop-shaped vanes. These are moved by a rotating component called a unison ring.
The benefit is higher power and torque across the rev range because the turbo is always operating at the highest possible efficiency. The downside is thereās lots that can go wrong. Unison rings wear and can stick, and precise control depends on multiple sensors and electronics. In contrast, aĀ non VGT turboĀ tends to last longer and be more reliable, therefore, for an engine such as the 6.0 Powerstroke, aĀ non VGT turboĀ is often considered more desirable.Ā
