With appropriate inspections and maintenance, it’s not uncommon for them to last 350,000 miles and more. Eventually though, components such as the lift and fuel injection pumps will need replacing, and when that day comes we’re here to help. For example, the 24 valve Cummins injectors we offer will help extend the life of your engine.

We’re also here for when you want to upgrade your 5.9. In 1998 it went through a major revision, primarily to keep up with emissions regs, and acquired a 24 valve head, electronic fuel injection and a Holset turbo.

One of the most interesting features of this engine was the absence of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or other emissions controls. The design was so good they just weren’t needed, and that’s one reason for the high reliability: There’s less to go wrong!

When the 24 valve engine debuted, output with a manual transmission was 235hp and 460lb-ft. That grew to 305hp and 555lb-ft before the engine was phased out in 2007. Fortunately, for those who want more, a range of 5.9 Cummins 24 valve performance upgrades are available from Powerhouse Diesel.

24V Parts Overview

We offer a wide range of engine parts and specialized tools to help you maintain your 5.9 liter. Tech Tips: X-TRA Slick Engine and Fastener Assembly Lubricant (Sold Separately): The use of XD541 is highly recommended during engine assembly. Apply X-TRA Slick Lubricant to head studs, head bolts, main studs, main bolts, connecting rod bolts, and any other fasteners used during engine assembly. Using a proper assembly lubricant during fastener installation reduces friction and torque pre-load scatter in the torquing sequence, while also helping to prevent thread galling and seizing.
